Ethics Beyond the Isolated Self

Self-transcendence is a very important topic that helps us progress along the path to enlightenment and live with greater happiness, peace, and love. Self-transcendence is the balance between selfishness and selflessness.

When we are selfish, it prevents us from experiencing the richness of love. It is detrimental to our happiness and our state. Some people feel selfishness will help them get what they want. They may find themselves with more material possessions, perhaps, perhaps not. When you align your will with the will of the world, you actually find it easier to become successful. One who is purely selfish will not actually succeed materially either. But in a more obvious sense, inwardly, we sacrifice a great deal when we are selfish.

When we are selfless, we also leave somebody out: ourselves. The whole idea is to be self-transcendent.

Self-transcendence means that we act on behalf of the totality. We are very considerate and conscientious, and our decisions are informed by what is beneficial and consistent with the whole. Instead of saying me first and everybody else later, I ask what I can do to act on behalf of the entire field.

There are extreme energetic repercussions, positive ones, when we do this, because we are signaling to our subtle body that we are not limited to this little form, but that our field is all. When we love another person, our heart expands because we say that other person is myself, and therefore our energy field will actually adapt to that orientation.

This is very much in alignment with enlightenment. Enlightenment is an actual state of consciousness in which one feels that the entire manifestation of the universe, the galaxies and the planets, is their cosmic body. In the opposite direction, the most fundamental, quintessential substrate of all existence, Brahman, the Super Soul, is also their true self.

Their true self is the self within all of us, refracted into each of our personalities and streams of existence. Their body, their manifest self, is the whole universe. When we live this way, we consider what we can do that is beneficial to everybody. One aspect of it is acting on behalf of all. You are a steward of the field.

A lot of people think, well, here is my family, or my apartment, or my circle of friends, and that is just an extended ego. To make any division between my country and that country is patriotism. Be patriotic for the universe. We are galactic patriots. Even when we say my planet, it is too small. My country is too small and creates division. Whatever you behold is your very self.

When you act from that orientation, you generate karma. The inner energy, the state of your consciousness, the manifold consciousness that is our experience, transforms in a very pleasurable, wonderful way.

Sometimes people say they have to sacrifice too much. No, you will have to work a little harder or a little more gracefully to find the solution that actually is better for everybody. When you ignore the suffering of your neighbor, you bring suffering to your door. A selfish neighbor means that you have an unhappy neighbor. If you have happy neighbors, it is in everybody’s best interest, including your own.

It is important to always be true to yourself within this context, because this does not mean you abandon your own predilections or your own integrity. Our service is an expression of our own predilections, our own svadharma. But our consideration is everything, everyone, all that we behold.

A long time ago, my teacher said, “If somebody is before you, you’re meant to love them.” We do not choose who we love. We love whomever shows up, because who are we to decide? What informs a decision to love somebody and not somebody else? That is obviously a product of one’s own bias.

If something is before you, if there is a rock in the road, if a plant needs watering, if a neighbor is in an emergency and needs help, do not turn a blind eye because that is not my problem. This really opens the heart.

Groundhog Day is all about this. He lives the same day over and over again as a selfish jerk. He knows he is a jerk, and he even talks about it. Initially, he wonders what is going on and thinks it is horrible. Then he decides to use it to get his way. He makes all this money, tricks people, and gets a woman to be with him by tricking her. He is not happy.

Then one day, it clicks, and he makes it about others. At the very end of the movie, he says, “What can I do for you today?” That is the epiphany he has. He is locked in this loop until he learns his lesson.

Life is very much like that. Even though we still go into the next day, it is the same monotony until we learn the meaning of life, which is others. To be there for others, to love others, but to do it while loving ourselves, while being true to ourselves, while having integrity.

Freedom and Relational Responsibility

This is a vastly complex topic, and you can contemplate it for years and years. There are a lot of nuances and considerations to make. What does it mean to be self-transcendent? How does one act? How does one make a decision in these situations?

It is important to recognize freedom. Look upon another with freedom. The other must be living as an expression of their own sovereignty. If one is exploited, then you have not honored their freedom.

Freedom means that we see everybody expressing their loyalty as an expression of their freedom. We hold people in freedom as a part of that self-transcendent state. We are in service to others. We want them to become more free, more happy, and more true to themselves.

We are an agent of the universe, but our actions are informed by the intrinsic nature of things. Spontaneity happens when we do not plan. Agency happens, and we watch ourselves acting. That element very much applies here too.

Self-transcendence is a powerful reorientation that you can really stand up for. Our world is largely selfish, and there are some people who are selfless, which in a way seems like a higher level. Perhaps it is higher in a way. But if you do not take care of yourself, it does not make sense, because you cannot really continue to be in service. If you are truly selfless, you need to make sure to feed yourself. Otherwise, you will run out of energy. Metaphorically speaking, that applies in a number of ways.

We really are acting as stewards of the universe, and we are loving everything and doing what is right. It is righteousness. It is love. It is stewardship.

It is helpful to have sangha practicing this because, together, we can normalize the principle. A lot of people are very me-first, and the natural reaction is that, in order to survive in this world, I need to be me-first too. But we actually lose something very special when we do that. It is important to protect this orientation and inspire the world to live this way.

It is not that hard to do. One just has to see the value in it and believe that it is possible. You will find the serendipitous solution. In most situations, there is something that works for everybody. It is fun finding out what that is. Everybody is smiling and happy when we find it.

If we live this way, meditation is much more powerful. You sit down and meditate after a self-transcendent day, and you are going to be more expansive. There is light and energy there because you are not living in resistance. You are living in unity. You are not living in the agency of self. You are living in the spontaneity of love.

This is a paramount bhakti principle. We do not need so much conflict in our world. Sometimes we think of these great leaders around us as obviously above us. Yet they do not even get this. Let that shift your hierarchy a little bit. There are famous people and politicians, and maybe you really like them, or maybe you are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Either way, recognize that this simple teaching, which perhaps some five-year-olds know, is something beyond even them. If we were from a futuristic humanity, a futuristic Earth, this would be Humanity 101.

Contemplative Practice and Inner Illumination

This principle is obviously a very heart-centered principle, so meditate on the heart. Focus into the light. There is a light within. It is the substance of the spirit. In some spiritual traditions, it is referred to as Shakti. In yoga, it is sometimes called the causal planes of light. You can see it.

If you see the light, it will melt you down and renew you. When Jesus said you have to be reborn in the spirit, not in the flesh, it seems to me this is exactly what he was talking about.

When we go into the light, we go into the source, and we melt down. It literally feels like that, very physically. Your nervous system feels it very strongly. But more than that, your most subtle, paradigmatic depths get melted. Your sense of self and your sense of reality get melted, and you reemerge. You are reborn, and when you are reborn, you are reborn more correctly.

All the sediments of impurity get washed away, and the pure metal alloy of the gold soul comes back. It just so happens that the light is gold in its deepest quality. In its deepest personal quality, it is gold. It turns clear when it becomes impersonal light.

This is a strange thing to say. It is very esoteric. But before the gold, there is a whole spectrum of light as well, which consists of different depths of essence that you can match.

One way you can go into the light is through gazing. Gazing is a very powerful thing. Look at everything at once, hold your vision and your field large, and just melt. Soften your grip on reality.

It almost seems quantum mechanical. In quantum mechanics, when we look at something, we collapse the wave function, and it no longer exists in a potential state. It exists in a specific state. So we want to hold the wave function open. I do not know if that is exactly what it is. That might actually be what it is. I think it is electromagnetic as well, but it feels that way. Hold possibility open. Do not let your idea or consciousness collapse something into a specific state.

When the light starts coming, focus on the light. It has beautiful qualities. In yoga, it is called soma. It is like waves of light, and it washes through you. Sometimes these colors wash through almost like watercolor.

Center on the heart chakra, anahata, so you can feel your heart. If you are not seeing the light while gazing, you can just feel your heart. If you want to close your eyes, you can see the light with your eyes closed as well.

The whole idea here is to live with self-transcendence and with wu wei, knowing our principles. Through that orientation, we can access the light. If you live in selfishness, it is hard to go into light. If you live in selflessness and you are in pain, it is very distracting. It is hard to go into light. You go into light when things are good, man. They just have to be good. Love, peacefulness, and all of that.

Soften any resistance to reality. Let everything melt. Be absorbed. Slightly blur your vision if you are gazing with your eyes open. Try to look at the periphery.

Reach out. One of the key things in going into light is to reach out with your energy. Feel that you are expansive. You have to intuitively expand your attention. Feel that you are transparent, holographic, in an energetic sense.

You give your attention to the light. When you focus on it, it magnifies. Notice its texture. Notice the palpable feeling associated with it. Allow its brightness to wash you away.

There is a luminosity that wants to shine if we allow it. Feel it touch your chakras and the astral channels, the nadis. Feel the ambient power. It is power, destructive and creative. It is the power of the universe channeling through us, as us. It is us, the quintessential, the essential within.

If you are not seeing the light, just feel your heart. Or even simply observe what is without judgment, and light comes of its own accord when we become available to it.

How does one erase oneself? Absorption in light.

Bring your attention to your heart’s center. Put your hands there. Still. Self-transcendence. You are the cosmos. Absorbed in this.

Adam Wes We'll just begin with a short meditation, centering and clearing, while we wait for a couple more people to join.

Monicka G Am I the first?

Adam Wes Are you the first one?

Monicka G I'm the first attendant.

I don't see other people.

Adam Wes Look at the gallery view on Zoom. There are a thousand people here.

Monicka G Wow, how wonderful.

Adam Wes Oh, no.

Monicka G That's great. Thank you, thank you.

Adam Wes Welcome.

Monicka G Thank you.

Adam Wes Welcome, everybody. I was expecting a few other people, but we should get started.

Before we start, I'd like to share something so everybody knows that it's there. I did quite a bit of work on a new asset for the community. Kira, will you talk about it with me?

Kira So, if we go...

Adam Wes I'm getting my echo. Here we have the sermon library, which will be very useful. You don't have to take any notes. Well, you can if you want.

Here's a little movie poster for each sermon, and it's all in the theme of futuristic spiritual community. When you click into any of these, like the one we did on values a few weeks back, there's an essay, which is essentially what I said without the conversational aspect of the talk. This is all transcribed from the actual recording. There's the full transcript, where, hey, look, there's Peyton right there. He said, "Hello, hello." You will be recorded by the scribes.

Then we have the study guide, and this is really, really useful. It goes over the key points, the theme of the lesson, an assignment, which I highly recommend you consider, an actionable focus, and reflection prompts. I highly recommend you consider all of these things.

Then, of course, we have the actual audio recording. I'll be sending out the video recording separately, just for privacy, so that people who are here can only be seen by people who are here or in the community.

We've got these quotes on the side that are drawn from the actual script, and most of it is almost exactly verbatim, with a little bit of polishing. So, yeah, I'm really excited about this. What do you think, Kira?

Oh, we can't hear you yet.

Kira Oh, I wasn't muted. I love it! It's so amazing. I feel like each one is a portal. It's very invitational. Because of the images, it really brings each lecture, sermon, sorry, to life. I feel invited to go in and explore. Thank you so much for creating this for us.

Adam Wes You're welcome. It was quite a bit of work to make this happen from the very raw transcript. I actually used a lot of computer programming to do it, so this is all the power of computer programming, if anybody wants to learn.

Kira That image of gratitude and thankfulness, the one just before, is literally the female version of what you do outside the grocery store every time. You're like, "I love it so much."

Adam Wes I was going to say, this is so you right there. That's you too.

I just wanted to share this. It's very easy to find: School of Futuristic Intelligence dot school slash sermons. Wonderful. It's mobile-friendly, so if you want to look on your phone, it looks really great on the phone. Instead of going on Instagram, you can review some of the quotes and things like that.

Hi, Andrea.

All right, let's get started. We have a very special topic today: self-transcendence.

Ethics Beyond the Isolated Self

This is a very important topic that helps us progress along the path to enlightenment and live with greater happiness, peace, and love. Self-transcendence is the balance between selfishness and selflessness.

Both of these things prevent us. When we're selfish, it prevents us from experiencing the richness of love. It is detrimental to our happiness and our state.

Some people feel selfishness will help them get what they want. They may find themselves with more material possessions, perhaps, perhaps not, actually. Because when you align your will with the will of the world, you actually find it easier to become successful. One who is purely selfish won't actually succeed materially either. But in a more obvious sense, inwardly, we sacrifice a great deal when we're selfish.

Now, when we're selfless, we also leave somebody out: ourselves. The whole idea is to be self-transcendent.

Self-transcendence means that we act on behalf of the totality. We're very considerate, conscientious, and our decisions are informed by what is beneficial and consistent with the whole. Instead of saying, "Me first and everybody else later," I say, "What can I do to act on behalf of the entire field?"

There are extreme energetic repercussions, positive ones, when we do this, because we are signaling to our subtle body that we are not limited to this little form, but that our field is all.

When we love another person, our heart expands because we say, "That other person is myself," and therefore my energy field will actually adapt to that orientation.

This is very much in alignment with enlightenment. Enlightenment is an actual state of consciousness where one feels that the entire manifestation of the universe, the galaxies and the planets, is their cosmic body. In the opposite direction, the most fundamental, quintessential substrate of all existence, Brahman, the Super Soul, is also their true self.

Their true self is the self within all of us, refracted into each of our personalities and streams of existence. Their body, their manifest self, is the whole universe. When we live this way, we say, "Okay, what can I do in consideration for everybody that is beneficial to all?"

One aspect of it is acting on behalf of all. You are a steward of the field.

A lot of people think, "Well, here's my family, or my apartment, or my circle of friends," and that's just an extended ego, right? To make any division between my country and that country is patriotism. Be patriotic for the universe. We're galactic patriots, right? Because even when we say, "My planet," it's too small. "My country" is too small and creates division. Whatever you behold is your very self.

When you act from that orientation, you generate karma. The inner energy, the state of your consciousness, the manifold consciousness that is our experience, transforms in a very pleasurable, wonderful way.

There are solutions. Sometimes people say, "Well, I have to sacrifice too much." No, you will have to work a little harder or a little more gracefully to find the solution that actually is better for everybody. Because when you ignore the suffering of your neighbor, you bring suffering to your door. A selfish neighbor means that you have an unhappy neighbor. If you have happy neighbors, it's in everybody's best interest, including your own.

It's important to always be true to yourself within this context, because this does not mean you abandon your own predilections or your own integrity. Our service is an expression of our own predilections, our own svadharma. But our consideration is everything, everyone, all that we behold.

I remember a long time ago, my teacher said, "If somebody is before you, you're meant to love them."

We don't choose who we love. We love whomever shows up, because who are we to decide? What informs a decision like, "I love so-and-so and not somebody else"? That's obviously a product of one's own bias.

If something is before you, if there's a rock in the road, if a plant needs watering, if a neighbor is in an emergency and needs help, don't turn a blind eye because that's not my problem.

It's making me emotional, because this really opens the heart. If you could really connect with this...

You have to watch Groundhog Day.

Has anybody watched Groundhog Day? I rewatch that all the time. Groundhog Day is all about this. He lives the same day over and over and over and over again as a selfish jerk. He knows he's a jerk, and he even talks about it.

Initially, he's like, "What's going on? This is horrible." Then he says, "Okay, well, I'm going to use this to get my way." He makes all this money, tricks people, and gets a woman to be with him by tricking her. He's not happy.

Then one day, it clicks, and he makes it about others. At the very end of the movie, he says, "What can I do for you today?"

That's the line, because that's the epiphany he has. At the end of the movie, he goes to the next day. He's locked in this loop until he learns his lesson.

Life is very much like that. Even though we still go into the next day, it's the same monotony until we learn the meaning of life, which is others. To be there for others, to love others, but to do it while loving ourselves, while being true to ourselves, while having integrity.

So, great movie, Groundhog Day. We'll let the program decide to put this on the assignment list. Thank you, program. Nice.

Freedom and Relational Responsibility

This is a vastly complex topic, actually, and you can contemplate this for years and years and years. There are a lot of nuances and considerations to make.

First of all, what does it mean to be self-transcendent? How does one act? How does one make a decision in these situations?

It's important to recognize freedom. Look upon another with freedom. The other must be living as an expression of their own sovereignty. If one is exploited or convinced, then you haven't honored their freedom.

I hope all of you are here today as an expression of your freedom, not out of obligation or coercion of any kind. You're here because you value the teachings, like I value them and we all value them. We worship the teaching, right? We love meditation. There's a sort of resonance between us.

It's like people who like math. There's a resonance there. People who like ballet, there's a resonance there.

We've got Lily and Praveen showing up. Yay! Is that Lily? That is Lily, right? Lily's my neighbor. Hi, Praveen. Namaste.

Freedom means that we see everybody expressing their loyalty as an expression of their freedom. We hold people in freedom as a part of that self-transcendent state. We're in service to others. We want them to become more free, more happy, and more true to themselves.

That is a part of their intrinsic nature in the moment, and perhaps on another level in their lifetime. So when they come together, it's an expression of synchronicity.

There's a lot of giving agency away. We're an agent of the universe, but our actions are informed by the intrinsic nature of things.

We talked about wu wei last week, which you would have loved, Kira. Maybe you should go and look at the talk on the website. It's all about spontaneity. Spontaneity happens when we don't plan. Agency happens, and we watch ourselves acting. That element very much applies here too.

By the way, people whose faces aren't showing, if, out of an expression of your freedom, you would like to share your face, it contributes to the experience. Andrea's laughing at me. You'll get more out of it because I'm speaking to everybody. I can feel Andrea laughing. But I understand if it's not appropriate for you in this moment. That's okay. I encourage it if you feel that you want to.

Self-transcendence is a powerful reorientation that you can really stand up for. Our world is largely selfish, and there are some people who are selfless, which in a way seems like a higher level. Perhaps it's higher in a way. But if you don't take care of yourself, it doesn't make sense, because you can't really continue to be in service. If you're truly selfless, you need to make sure to feed yourself; otherwise, you'll run out of energy, right? Metaphorically speaking, that applies in a number of ways.

We really are acting as stewards of the universe, and we're loving everything and doing what is right. It's righteousness. It's love. It's stewardship.

It's nice to have sangha practicing this because, together, we can normalize the principle.

A lot of people are very me-first, and the natural reaction is, "Okay, well, in order to survive in this world, I need to be me-first too." But we actually lose something very special when we do that.

That inner thing almost made me get emotional. Well, it did make me get emotional. Right there, I was feeling Groundhog Day, right? So we lose that. It's important to protect this orientation and inspire the world to live this way.

It's not that hard to do. One just has to see the value in it and believe that it's possible. You'll find the serendipitous solution. In most situations, there's something that works for everybody. It's fun finding out what that is. Everybody's smiling and happy when we find that.

Of course, if we live this way, meditation is much more powerful. You sit down and meditate after a self-transcendent day, and you're going to be more expansive. There's light and energy there because you're not living in resistance. You're living in unity. You're not living in the agency of self. You're living in the spontaneity of love.

It's very bhakti. This is a very, very paramount bhakti principle.

Let's see. Good timing. Any questions, comments, or ideas?

Colleen Groundhog Day was about 30 years ago?

Adam Wes Hi, Mom.

Colleen I didn't like it at all, so I'm going to have to watch it again with new eyes.

Adam Wes Wow. Yeah, it was about 30 years ago that it came out. Nice. Watch it again.

My teacher once said to me, because I was going through a phase where I was watching a movie every day years ago, "If you're going to watch a movie every day, watch Groundhog Day." I think I was watching The Matrix every day. He said, "If you're going to watch a movie every day, watch Groundhog Day," because it signals, "Wait, you're living the same day over and over here."

It's a really special movie. It's about love. It's about love.

Cool, Mom. Thank you. Nice to see you. Love you.

Kira, were you going to share?

Kira Oh, yeah. I feel so moved by what you're sharing. I feel like I'm even tearing up a little bit, because it's just such a beautiful way to live. If we imagine more of the world, more of the people, living in this way, there will be such an immense amount of love on the planet.

I can feel the potential impact of that, even just for each one of us, but also if we were to shift to that way of living together on the planet.

Adam Wes Yeah. It's amazing. We don't need so much conflict in our world.

Sometimes we think of these great leaders around us. They're obviously just above us, right? They don't even get this. Let that shift your hierarchy a little bit. There are these famous people, politicians, and maybe you really like them, or maybe you're on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Either way, just recognize that this simple teaching, which maybe some five-year-olds know, or which we're certainly talking about here, is something that's beyond even them. If we were from a futuristic humanity, a futuristic Earth, this would be Humanity 101.

Kira Kindergarten.

Adam Wes So...

Kira I sometimes feel like I'm from somewhere else, because it doesn't make sense to me that all the leaders aren't like that. I'm like, "What do you mean?"

Adam Wes It's one of the most important qualities in a leader.

Gandhi was like this. He was a great leader with a lot of patience, and he got kicked around, put in jail, and things. But he said, "What's right? We're going to do something that is right."

What did he say? "The truth is the truth, and it doesn't matter if you're a minority of one. If you see the truth, that's all that matters." He said something along those lines.

All right. Anybody else want to share? I love sharing. Then we're going to start meditating because it's 6:30. Sharing is caring. I don't know where that came from.

Contemplative Practice and Inner Illumination

All right, let's meditate. This principle is obviously a very heart-centered principle, so let's meditate on the heart.

Focus into the light. For those of you who are new here, we meditate on light. That's why it's called the Love Light Sangha. Sangha means community, a spiritual community.

There's a light within. It is the substance of the spirit. In some spiritual traditions, it's referred to as Shakti. In yoga, it's sometimes called the causal planes of light.

You're reborn, and when you're reborn, you're reborn more correctly.

All the sediments of impurity get washed away, and the pure metal alloy of the gold soul comes back. It just so happens that the light is gold in its deepest quality. In its deepest personal quality, it's gold. It turns clear when it becomes impersonal light.

This is a strange thing to say. It's very esoteric. We have to go into that. But before the gold, there's a whole spectrum of light as well, which consists of different depths of essence that you can match.

One way you can go into the light is through gazing. Gazing is a very powerful thing. You look at everything at once, hold your vision and your field large, and kind of just melt. You soften your grip on reality.

It almost seems quantum mechanical. In quantum mechanics, when we look at something, we collapse the wave function, and it no longer exists in a potential state. It exists in a specific state. So we want to hold the wave function open.

I don't know if that's exactly what it is. That might actually be what it is. I think it's electromagnetic as well, but it feels that way. Hold possibility open. Don't let your idea or consciousness collapse something into a specific state.

When the light starts coming, just focus on the light. It has beautiful qualities. In yoga, it's called soma. It's like waves of light, and it washes through you. My mom, Colleen, often sees these in colors washing through, almost like watercolor. It's wonderful.

It's good in the astral body, which is a more manifest dimension of the universe within. Everything's within.

Center on the heart chakra, anahata, so you can feel your heart. If you're not seeing the light while you're gazing, you can just feel your heart. If you want to close your eyes, you can see the light with your eyes closed as well.

The whole idea here is to live with self-transcendence and with wu wei, knowing our principles. That's why we give these talks. Through that orientation, we can access the light.

If you live in selfishness, it's hard to go into light. It's very hard. If you live in selflessness and you're in pain, it's very distracting. It's hard to go into light.

You go into light when things are good, man. They just have to be good. Love, peacefulness, and all of that.

So let's do it. I'm going to gaze. If you want to gaze at me, this is one of the ways it can really help you access the light, because there's an attunement that happens. You can also close your eyes, and you're just with the field.

We'll go until 7:05. Is that okay? Can we go to 7:05? That's 30 minutes. Then we'll basically not do any sharing because we just ran out of time.

Let's get started. Usually, we like to share at the end.

Lily, I'm so glad you're here. Wonderful.

All right, let's start with this. I play music. Music gives us a sort of energetic focus. Am I sharing it? Can anybody hear? I think you hear it better now. It's soft, but it's going to get louder.

Just enjoy the music. It's heart-centered music, and sometimes it's got a third-eye quality and a navel quality, power, and clarity.

Yay, Peyton. I'm happy Peyton's here too. Happy you're here, Oliver.

Soften any resistance to reality. We're letting everything melt. Be absorbed. It's a good directive.

It's good to just slightly blur your vision if you're gazing with your eyes open. Try to look at the periphery.

We've moved through strata. Now we can take it to the next level. Reach out. One of the key things in going into light is to reach out with your energy. Feel that you're expansive. You have to intuitively expand your attention.

Feel that you are transparent, holographic, in an energetic sense.

You give your attention to the light. When you focus on it, it magnifies.

Notice its texture. Notice the palpable feeling associated with it.

Allow its brightness to wash you away.

There's a luminosity that wants to shine if we allow it.

Feel it touch your chakras and the astral channels, the nadis.

Feel the ambient power. It is power, destructive and creative.

It's the power of the universe channeling through us, as us. It is us, the quintessential, the essential within.

This song has a lot of power. It fills the light in a way.

Our love, of course.

If you're not seeing the light, just feel your chakra. Feel your heart. Or even simply observe what is without judgment, and light comes of its own accord when we become available to it.

How does one erase oneself? Absorption in light. Music.

Let's take a moment and bring your attention to your heart's center. Put your hands there, your finger there.

Still. Self-transcendence. You are the cosmos. Absorbed in this.

You can come out of the meditation.

Reflections Following the Meditation

All right. Let's just do a couple minutes of sharing. I'd like to do five minutes, and then we'll hop off. If you guys can hang in there for another five minutes, that'd be great.

Mom, would you like to share first, please?

Colleen I didn't know there were so many shades of red. That was quite lovely. As I started the meditation, it all blended together like a big watercolor.

Adam Wes Beautiful.

Colleen The half hour went very quickly. I feel very relaxed. Thank you.

Adam Wes Nice. Well, it was 25 minutes. Can you tell us a little about the red? You saw red?

Colleen All different shades. All different shades.

Adam Wes Amazing. Where was this red coming from?

Colleen I guess my heart. I don't know. You say green is the heart.

Adam Wes No, red's the heart too.

Colleen It's the heart.

Adam Wes Yeah, green is the heart chakra, but red's the heart color.

Colleen Okay. Thank you, Adam.

Adam Wes You're welcome. Wonderful. Thank you, Mom. Good job.

How about you, Ariella?

AriellaShira L Yes. I started off focusing on eye contact with you, and that was very interesting, but I wasn't going into the light. Then I closed my eyes, and I was able to go into the light.

Adam Wes You're very used to closed-eyes meditation. You started that way. It's another skill you'll have to develop, if you want to.

You can practice by meditating with yourself in the mirror. Very powerful. In fact, if you've ever seen me in an airport bathroom, you would have noticed a strange guy staring in the mirror for five minutes.

I just shared some of my funny, quirky things I do. When you're traveling, you get a moment with enlightenment, so you go and look in the mirror.

One time, this kid said, "Are you Jesus?" It was so funny. He really looked at me in a really cute way. It was amazing.

AriellaShira L Right.

Adam Wes It was literally an airport bathroom.

Kira Maybe you should travel more.

Adam Wes Namaste, Ariella. Thank you. Wonderful.

AriellaShira L Wonderful.

Adam Wes What did you say, Kira?

Kira I said maybe you should travel more, so more kids get to see that magic.

Adam Wes Working toward it.

Kira, would you like to share your experience? I saw you doing the open eyes.

Kira Yeah. It's been a while since I've been in the light, and it was so beautiful. I feel like my energy body has been restored. There's more concentration in the heart center, and it feels more right, if that makes sense.

I don't know where it was before, but I can feel it palpably concentrated here at the heart, and it just feels so loving.

It's interesting how there's a translation between what you actually feel in your energy body and the feelings that come with that. You feel more love for all, and it's correlated with a concentration and attention of energy here at the center.

It's beautiful. Wonderful lecture. Thank you so much. Sermon, sermon, I want to say.

Adam Wes Lectures are for universities. Sermons are for sanghas. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the right word for it. Lecture is good too, though.

Namaste, Kira. Thank you.

Lily, Monicka, or anybody else, do you want to share for a moment? You don't have to, by the way, but if you want to share or you have a question, you're welcome to.

Oh, 7:06. It looks like nobody's unmuting.

I'm grateful you are all here. We do this every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. I'll do my best to get the transcript up as soon as possible. Bring your friends who would be resonant.

You're welcome, Monicka. Thank you for being here. Message me. I'm not sure where you're from or how we got connected.

All right, everybody. Namaste. Thank you. Just be self-transcendent. Explore that. Enjoy that.

Nice to see you, Peyton, David, and Praveen. Bye, everybody.

Study Guide

The lesson explored self-transcendence as a way of living beyond both selfishness and selflessness, honoring personal integrity while acting for the benefit of the whole. It also considered freedom, stewardship, love, and a heart-centered practice of becoming available to the light within.

Theme of the Lesson

Self-transcendence means acting on behalf of the totality while remaining true to oneself, honoring the freedom of others, and living in the spontaneity of love.

Key Points
  • Self-transcendence is the balance between selfishness and selflessness.
  • To act on behalf of the totality is to consider what is beneficial and consistent with the whole.
  • Being self-transcendent does not mean abandoning personal integrity, predilections, or svadharma.
  • Whatever is before us is included in our consideration. We do not choose who we love.
  • We are stewards of the field, loving everything and doing what is right.
  • Others are to be held in freedom as expressions of their own sovereignty.
  • Service supports others in becoming more free, more happy, and more true to themselves.
  • In most situations, there is a solution that works for everybody.
  • Living in unity rather than resistance supports more expansive meditation.
  • The heart and the light within can be approached through gazing, softened vision, expansive attention, and observation without judgment.
  • When attention is given to the light, it magnifies.
  • The orientation is to live with self-transcendence and wu wei, knowing our principles.
Assignment

Live as a steward of the field, considering what is beneficial for everyone without leaving yourself out. When you sit in meditation, bring attention to the heart and become available to the light, softening resistance and allowing attention to expand.

Actionable Focus for the Week
  • Awareness of moments shaped by selfishness or by leaving yourself out.
  • Consideration of what may be beneficial and consistent with the whole.
  • Love for whomever or whatever appears before you.
  • Respect for the freedom and sovereignty of others.
  • Openness to a serendipitous solution that works for everybody.
  • Attention to the heart, whether or not light is seen.
  • Softened vision, peripheral awareness, and an expansive field while gazing.
  • Observation of what is without judgment.
  • Softening resistance and becoming absorbed.
Optional Reflection Prompts
  • What does it feel like to consider yourself and the whole together?
  • Where might another person be held more fully in freedom?
  • What becomes present when attention rests gently in the heart?
